Folarin Balogun did not score in the USMNT’s 2-0 win over Australia, but his influence was still clear. He helped generate the move that ended with Cameron Burgess’ own goal and won the Man of the Match award.

That continued a strong start to the World Cup for the Monaco forward, who scored two goals against Paraguay.

Balogun has looked sharp, direct and confident as Mauricio Pochettino’s side secured their knockout-stage place with a game to spare.

His displays are not only impressing US soccer fans. They are also drawing attention from people with respected European CVs, including Wayne Rooney and Olivier Giroud.

Speaking on BBC in the UK after the match, Rooney highlighted the qualities that made Balogun so difficult for Australia to manage.

He said: “He has pace, he has power, this is about Balogun, his directness, his rawness and his ability to drive with the ball.”

That assessment fits what Balogun has shown in this tournament. Even without scoring against Australia, he kept stretching defenders and forcing uncomfortable decisions.

It also reflects his club form. Balogun scored 19 goals for Monaco this season, and if he keeps this level for the whole World Cup, it would not be a shock if he becomes a major transfer target.

Olivier Giroud highlights Balogun’s movement

Giroud also offered detailed praise on BBC, focusing on more than just Balogun’s athletic profile.

He said: “He’s doing really well, he’s scored 19 goals this year with Monaco, full of confidence, a lot of composure. He’s really available for his teammates, he’s not just standing up front, he does a lot of movement, can run in behind, he can hold the ball.

“He has a really good connection with Ricardo Pepi also. I’m enjoying seeing him play and I hope he will score more goals,” the Frenchman concluded.
