We select three high and low points from Walter Mazzarri’s season in charge of Watford.

High points:

Watford 3-1 Manchester United (18th September, 2016 – Premier League)

After coming away from the London Stadium with his first win in charge of Watford, Walter Mazzarri welcomed his old Serie A nemesis, Jose Mourinho, to Vicarage Road. Goals from Etienne Capoue, Juan Zuniga and Troy Deeney handed the Hornets a surprise victory – and condemned United to their third defeat in a week.

Arsenal 1-2 Watford (31st January, 2017 – Premier League)

Mazzarri arrived at the Emirates without a league win in seven games.

Early strikes from Younes Kaboul and Deeney gave the Hornets a shock 2-0 lead within the first 13 minutes. The hosts fought back with a second-half Alex Iwobi goal but Mazzarri’s men held firm to pull off an incredible upset. The result helped derail Arsenal’s season and would turn out to be Mazzarri’s third – and final – away win as Watford boss.

Watford 1-0 Swansea City (15th April, 2017 – Premier League)

Watford hit the magic 40 point mark with a narrow victory over relegation-threatened Swansea City. The win took the Hornets up to 10th in the table and secured Mazzarri’s minimum requirement for the season.

Low points:

Millwall 1-0 Watford (29th January, 2017 – FA Cup Fourth Round)

Millwall became the second lower division side to knock Watford out of a cup competition after Gillingham Town’s EFL Cup victory earlier in the season. Striker Steve Morrison netted a late winner for the League One side to hand last year’s semi-finalists an uninspiring exit.

Hull City 2-0 Watford (22nd April, 2017 – Premier League)

Relegation-bound Hull City came away with three points, despite playing over 65 minutes with 10-men. Lazar Markovic and Sam Clucas bagged the goals to give the hosts hope but also humiliate the visitors. Troy Deeney did show his professionalism after the game by offering his apologises to the travelling supporters.

Watford 0-5 Manchester City (21st May, 2017 – Premier League)

Mazzarri’s reign came to an end with a whimper. The Hornets were picked apart with ease by Pep Guardiola’s Champions League hunting Manchester City side. The result was Mazzarri’s heaviest defeat alongside the 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool back in November.
