Watford had a night to remember on Friday as they leapfrogged Wolverhampton Wanderers into seventh place in the Premier League thanks to an emphatic 5-1 win at Cardiff City.

The Hornets began brightly against the Bluebirds and opened the scoring after just 18 minutes through Gerard Deulofeu, who was on hand to slot home after great work from Troy Deeney.

Javi Gracia’s charges retained their lead at the break but they would have to wait until just after the hour to extend their advantage as the Spaniard beat Neil Etheridge with a composed finish.

From then on, however, the floodgates opened for the visitors, as Deulofeu sealed a hat-trick – the club’s first ever in the Premier League era – two minutes later after coolly lofting the ball over the beleaguered Bluebirds goalkeeper.

Deeney made it four with a simple tap-in midway through the second half and wrapped up the victory with his side’s fifth, the goals coming either side of Sol Bamba’s consolation for Neil Warnock’s strugglers.

Wolves are in action at 3pm on Saturday at Bournemouth and the pressure is on for seventh, with both Nuno Espirito Santo’s side and Gracia’s charges potentially hoping to then use it as a springboard for a spot in the Europa League.
