Newcastle United risk being frustrated by Watford again, in the hunt for Leicester City striker Islam Slimani.

The Daily Mail reported how Leicester were expecting a bid from Newcastle for Slimani in the coming weeks.

However, Watford have now entered the race for the Algerian forward too, according to the Daily Mirror.

If Watford beat Newcastle to Slimani, then it will be the second time that Marco Silva’s have beaten Newcastle to a striker in just six months.

Newcastle were chasing Andre Gray in the summer, as reported by the Chronicle, but Watford beat them to the punch.

And the Hornets may repeat the trick, in what would be a major blow to Newcastle.

Slimani may not have forced his way into becoming a permanent starter at Leicester, but the £30 million forward has shown glimpses of quality when he has been given an opportunity.

Rafael Benitez’s side are desperate for a striker, as they look to avoid the drop this season.

Newcastle have Joselu and Dwight Gayle available to them currently, but neither of the pair have looked capable of scoring regularly in the Premier League.

And if Newcastle are to miss out on Slimani, Benitez will surely be frustrated that another one of his transfer targets has escaped from his grasp.
