Former Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill is under consideration for the managerial vacancies at Sunderland and Watford, HITC Sport understands.

Sunderland are searching for a new manager following David Moyes’ resignation on Monday, while Watford parted company with Walter Mazzarri after the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City on the final day of the Premier League season.

Cotterill is looking to get back into management in his own right after working alongside Harry Redknapp at Birmingham City for the final three games of the season.

Cotterill played a huge role in helping Birmingham win two out of their last three games to secure survival in the Championship and Birmingham were keen to keep Cotterill at St Andrew’s, but the 52-year-old turned down the offer to stay as he wants to go it alone again as a manager.

Cotterill has managed and coached eight clubs in his 21-year coaching career with a 42 per cent win ratio.

Cotterill, who started his managerial career at Cheltenham Town has managed or coached in all four divisions of the professional pyramid and is highly-regarded within coaching circles.

Cotterill has several promotions on his CV and he led Bristol City to promotion to the Championship in 2014-15 by winning the League One title in style.

Cotterill could fit the bill as to the type of candidate for Sunderland as he has extensive knowledge of the Championship having worked with several clubs in the second tier and he also has experience of Sunderland having worked under Howard Wilkinson in 2002.
