Watford 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur: Mauricio Pochettino shares reason why he’s very upset

Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-1 to Watford on Sunday afternoon.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that he is ‘very upset’ after his side threw away a 2-1 lead at Watford on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs were in high spirits after beating Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Monday night, but they came crashing back down to earth at Vicarage Road.

The first half was a fairly tepid affair, but Spurs did take the lead as Lucas Moura’s cross was turned into his own net by Hornets midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Spurs should have stepped on the gas and attempted to seal the game, but Watford roared back and equalised with a Troy Deeney header from a Jose Holebas free kick.

Tottenham were rocking and continued to struggle from set pieces, with Craig Cathcart heading home a corner to hand Watford a 2-1 win, keeping their 100% record alive whilst ending Tottenham’s.

The truth is that Tottenham never really got going at Vicarage Road, and they certainly take the momentum from the win over Manchester United into the game, causing major disappointment for Pochettino.

Pochettino has told Football.London that he felt the game was a major wake-up call for his players, adding that to be a contender, Spurs need to see these games out – and he admitted that he is ‘very upset’ with how his side threw away the lead and lost to the Hornets.

“After four years it can happen,” said Pochettino. “After Man United I said I was disappointed. In the first half it felt like a friendly game. It’s difficult to understand if you want to be a contender. We controlled the first 45 minutes. It looks so easy because we controlled the ball. But after we scored we started to change and played long ball. It’s so important. It’s a very good wake-up call for everyone. People need to understand about the perception and reality.”

“To show we are a contender we need to be winning games. To win games you need to give your best. With the very difficult start to the season with the World Cup. The people talk about winning, but it’s only the start of September and it’s a long way to go. I’m very upset but I’m also happy because it’s a wake up call,” he added.
