Clinton Morrison has told Super Sunday Matchday on Sky Sports (04/10/20 at 10:50 am) to ‘watch this space’ in regards to Arsenal potentially signing Jorginho on deadline day.

ESPN have reported that Mikel Arteta is now ‘desperate’ to secure the services of the 28-year-old Chelsea midfielder, with Arsenal seemingly keen on adding forward-thinking bite to his midfield.

It seems as though those at Stamford Bridge are reluctant to let their defensive pivot leave unless they can sign a suitable replacement, such as West Ham’s Declan Rice.

Former Crystal Palace striker, Morrison, touched upon that and shared that Jorginho is a player Arsenal need and he’s not surprised Arteta wants to sign him.

“I can understand why he [Arteta] wants him,” Morrison told Sky Sports. “Weren’t Manchester City linked with him before he signed for Chelsea and Arteta was still at the club. So, that could be a reason as to why he wants him.

“But what he brings is that he is a midfielder, he looks to pass forward. If you watched the Liverpool game. Xhaka and Elneny played in there and Dani Ceballos was on the bench. It was like, how are you going to get out?

Arsenal’s record transfer deals

  1. Nicolas Pepe

    £72 million

  2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    £56 million

  3. Alexandre Lacazette

    £52 million

  4. Thomas Partey

    45 million

  5. Mesut Ozil

    £42 million

“You need a midfielder who is going to drive with the ball. Play that pass to Aubameyang – So, Jorginho, he might not get around the pitch well, but if you’re going to play out like Arsenal do then he can play out. He can be that pivot man.

“For me, it would be a good signing. I think it depends if Chelsea get Declan Rice. If Chelsea do the business and get Declan Rice then I think they might let Jorginho go and it would be a good signing for Arsenal. Watch this space.”

Biggest Premier League transfer deadline day deals in 2019

  1. Alex Iwobi

    Arsenal to Everton: £34 million

  2. Ismaila Sarr

    Rennes to Watford: £30 million

  3. Ryan Sessegnon

    Fulham to Tottenham: £25 million

  4. Kieran Tierney

    Celtic to Arsenal: £25 million

  5. Dennis Praet

    Sampdoria to Leicester: £18 million

If the recent football on the pitch is an indication of what might come on deadline day then supporters across the country are in for a crazy day of action.

There’s no doubt that Arsenal need more additions to their squad despite a fairly strong start to the season and a positive few months.

But given that Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny have deployed those holding roles, a player like Jorginho would move the ball quicker, play more progressive passes and look to carry the ball further up the pitch.
