As if there’s not enough pressure to win games on a weekly basis, Koeman’s festive decorations got a few fans hot under the collar.

Surely an Everton managing decorating his Christmas tree with red fairy lights wasn’t going to cause a fuss, right? Wrong. For this is 2016 and there is such a thing as social media.

So, when Toffees boss Ronald Koeman posted a picture on Twitter of his ruby-coloured festive foliage, it was almost literally a red flag to a bull. After a barrage of comments came his way, light-hearted or otherwise, the former Southampton manager showcased his new, white Christmas tree to the world. ‘Better?’, he asked. ‘Better’, the fans confirmed.

In terms of footballing faux pas, it’s hardly up there with Jolean Lescott’s ghost tweet of his shiny new supercar minutes after Aston Villa’s pathetic 6-0 home defeat to Liverpool. It’s hardly as if Koeman was parading around Liverpool city centre in a full Reds kit, shinpads an all, with ‘8 Gerrard’ emblazoned across his back belting You’ll Never Walk Alone in his unmistakable Dutch lilt.

But what do Everton fans make of this mini furore? Is it all a bit overblown or does Koeman need to realise that red is a no-go?

As one Evertonian poignantly points out; “The only thing red in my house is a newspaper”. Bravo, sir.
