Though even a top four berth looks beyond them already, United are hardly lacking in quality.
It might have come to your attention that Manchester United are struggling of late. Closer to bottom placed Swansea than top of the table Chelsea, Jose Mourinho’s rejuvenation of the 13-time Premier League champions may just take a little while longer than expected.
But time is hardly available in abundance when you’ve got, by far and away, the most expensively assembled team in the top flight. From the world’s most costly footballer in Paul Pogba, serial title winner Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Bundesliga player of the year Henrikh Mkhitaryan, not to mention proven, Premier League quality in David De Gea, Juan Mata, Michael Carrick and Anthony Martial, the strength of United’s squad somewhat belies their current league position of sixth.
But, if money was no object, which it often isn’t in the modern game, who would Everton fans cherry pick from Manchester United’s underachieving roster? Are they enticed by the prospect of Pogba lining up alongside James McCarthy in the middle? Or Ibrahimovic powering home a Leighton Baines set-piece? Maybe they’d just like a competent goalkeeper.
