Tottenham Hotspur beat New York Red Bulls 2-1 last night in a pre-season friendly.

Spurs trailed 1-0 at half-time, after new Red Bulls signing Tim Cahill won a penalty from Tottenham new boy Jan Vertonghen.

A Spurs fightback would begin in the second half, inspired by Gareth Bale, who shook off the injury sustained against Liverpool courtesy of Charlie Adam to feature strongly.

Bale – now wearing the club’s number 9 shirt – headed the equaliser, before new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson displayed a moment of magic.

The Icelandic midfielder picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area, jinked past two defenders and curled the ball over the goalkeeper to win the game.

It was described by the ESPN commentator as ‘world class’ and it is easy to see why. Spurs fans should be delighted with the pre-season form of their new signing, he also scored on his debut against Stevenage, and he should be a key player for the club going into next season.
