Alan Shearer has warned Newcastle over how they spend their money and used Everton as an example because they have ‘wasted’ hundreds of millions in the transfer market, as he told Premier League Productions (17/10/21 at 1:30 pm).
The former striker shared Everton have also wanted to go down the road the newly-rich Magpies want to go, yet after all they have been through, they are no better off.
The Toffees have spent so much that FFP has come down on them hard this summer, which meant that they had to spend next to nothing, including going for free-transfers, such as Andros Townsend.
But that seems to be a blessing in disguise, because by spending little, those players brought in have done better than the ones they paid big-money for.
Shearer made it clear that his former club need to get things right off the pitch if they are to push forward, else they will be like Everton who are ‘no better’ off.
“Use Everton as an example,” said Shearer. “I mean I don’t know how much Everton have spent, around about £600 million.
“Everton are no better off now then they were before they started that huge spending spree, are they? Look at the money they have wasted.
“That’s why I say the recruitment off the pitch is huge for whoever they appoint. We all know what they have wanted, where they have wanted to get to, we know all Everton have spent and they are no better now.
“Look at all the managers they have been through. All the money they have spent. All they money they have wasted. That’s why recruitment, off the pitch, as well as on it, for Newcastle, is huge.”

Everton have the right man in charge to deal with such situations because at Newcastle, Rafa Benitez was also given toffees to spend.
It will be interesting to see if the Merseyside club go all out again when FFP allows them do because it has proven to be a hindrance before.
Perhaps going for those gems, those lesser-known targets is the way forward, but will someone like Newcastle follow suit?
Before they can think like that, they have to get their own house in order first because the pieces to their very expensive jigsaw aren’t even in place yet.
