Ex-West Ham player Dean Ashton spoke exclusively to the Express about his former club’s reported interest in free agent Jack Wilshere, and made the bold claim that it will be a waste of time for both the player and the club if he ends up moving to the London Stadium.

According to a report from the Sun, the 26-year-old is close to joining the Hammers after being offered a contract worth £100k-a-week over three years.

Jack Wilshere of Arsenal is closed down by Tiemoue Bakayoko of Chelsea during the Carabao Cup Semi-Final Second Leg at Emirates Stadium on January 24, 2018 in London, England.

Wilshere has struggled badly with injuries over the past few years, but he seemed to be somewhere near his best once again for Arsenal last season, chalking up 38 appearances in all competitions.

Every Love Island contestant if they were an England player – World Cup!

He obviously still has plenty of talent, but it is just a question of whether or not he can maintain his fitness on a consistent enough basis over the next few years.

Ashton spoke exclusively to the Express, and claimed that the boyhood Hammers fan would be a poor signing from West Ham, suggesting that it is also a strange move for the player himself:

Jack Wilshere of Arsenal is chased by N'Golo Kante of Chelsea during the Carabao Cup Semi-Final Second Leg at Emirates Stadium on January 24, 2018 in London, England.

“I think it’d be a waste of time for the club and the player (to move to West Ham),” said Ashton. “It’d put pressure on him straight away. Having had long-term injuries I think he’d be better off going abroad to a warmer climate, a slower, technical league where he can thrive.”

Whilst Ashton undoubtedly has a point, if Wilshere can find a way of staying fit for a sustained period of time, he could turn out to be an absolutely wonderful signing for the east London outfit.
