Marc Overmars is leaving Ajax for Arsenal.
Overmars will take a senior role at Arsenal, and leave his director of football position at Ajax.
The Dutchman has held that role at Ajax since 2012, and continually had to bat off interest from clubs in their top players.
The final straw may have been the club’s inability to keep Davinson Sanchez this summer, who was sold to Tottenham for £42 million.
Ajax bought Sanchez just one year earlier for £5 million from Atletico Nacional, and had been determined to keep the Colombian.
Overmars had been clear about this, and told De Telegraaf, “Ajax has made Davinson a top offer for a new contract.”
Days later he was forced to back down from his stance, with Sanchez making clear he did not wish to sign it, and refusing ti play in the club’s Europa League qualifier.
It left Ajax having to cash in, and while they managed to get a good price from Tottenham, it is likely to have frustrated the Dutchman.
His talent spotting could come in handy at former club Arsenal, although as Gunners fans will attest to, the job of keeping their star men will also be a challenge in North London.
If it goes through he will be arriving at the end of the season when the Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil situations will be dealt with one way or another already, and he may have a big pot of cash to spend to sign replacements if required.
