The opening ceremony for the 2026 World Cup sparked some controversy as some people were led to believe that the USA flag was booed when on display.

As part of the famous ceremony, all 48 nations competing at this year’s World Cup introduced themselves to the stage at the Mexico City Stadium with their traditional flag.

Some flags like Argentina’s were booed but there have been contrasting reports about whether or not the USA flag was.

Was the USA flag booed?

UK reports claimed that there was audible booing inside the stadium when the USA came out with their flag.

BBC reporter Elizabeth Conway said: “Each country in the World Cup is being read out in Spanish and English as a flag from the country is taken to the circle in the middle. It’s a small version of the Olympics opening ceremony. The Mexico, Canada and USA flags all walked out together and as Mexico was read out, the stadium erupted! I could hear some boos as the United States was announced.”

Other fans on social media also picked up on it, saying: “Very loud boos being heard at the US flag during the opening ceremony of the World Cup.”

Another stated: “The US flag being booed lol, there hasn’t been a ball kicked yet.”

However, Mexico fan Nazario Assad, who was inside the stadium, denied that there were boos for the US flag and insisted that there were cheers for every nation except fierce rivals Argentina.

He told hitc: “When the US flag came out it was not cheered as how it happened with Portugal, Colombia and other that were intensely cheered. With the US it was total indifference and Argentina was booed as if it was Mexico’s greatest rival.”
