Promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday have won back-to-back games for the first time this season as they came from two goals down against Bristol City to win 3-2 thanks to a 96th-minute winner.

Tammy Abraham put the visitors 2-0 up at half-time before a spirited fightback from the hosts saw Steven Fletcher and Barry Bannan level things up in the second period.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men in quick succession as Wednesday’s Sam Hutchinson was sent off for bringing down Marlon Pack inside the area. Lee Tomlin’s resulting spot kick cannoned back of the post which lead to City’s Gary O’Neil receiving a second booking for a foul in the aftermath.

Then Kiearan Lee nicked victory for the hosts in the dying seconds of added time to take them up to 9th in the table, just a point outside of the play-off places.

It was a result that showed real determination and desire, and it could prove to be significant turning point for the Owls following their uninspiring start to the season.

Carlos Carvalhal’s men started the season with high expectations after losing out in the play-off final to Hull City last term and an opening weekend victory against recently relegated Aston Villa was certainly a promising start.

But a four-game winless run which included losses to Leeds United and Burton Albion soon took away the positivity as Wednesday started to slip down the table.

However, back-to-back hard-fought victories over Wigan Athletic and now Bristol has put the Owls’ season back on track and their second-half comeback on Tuesday night could prove to be a real turning point in their hunt for promotion this season.
