Tottenham Hotspur have allegedly pulled out of a deal for the 22-year-old.

Atletico Madrid's Lucas Hernandez fights for the ball against Espanyol's goalkeeper Pau Lopez

According to a report from Spanish newspaper Sport, Tottenham Hotspur have pulled out of negotiations to sign goalkeeper Pau Lopez this summer, and when you consider the last 12 months and the club’s low-ball offer, one wonders if the switch was always doomed to failure.

After all, not only did Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino opt not to give the 22-year-old a single minute of first-team action last season, even in one of the cup competitions, Spurs also reportedly attempted to low-ball his parent club Espanyol by offering only £1.9million instead of the £6million they had been hoping for (via Spanish newspaper AS).

Tottenham's Hugo Lloris during training

If Tottenham had any real desire to sign the Spaniard permanently they would have surely fought harder to keep him, rather than allegedly pulling out of negotiations without improving their initial offer which was well below that agreed when the player first arrived at White Hart Lane on loan.

there is no doubting Lopez’s talent, but there is a reason to doubt Tottenham’s need for another goalkeeper with Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm on the club’s books.

With Luke McGee also coming through the ranks, Spurs simply do not need to fork out more than they want for a player who did not get a look-in last season.

Tottenham's Michel Vorm warms up before the match

If he was good enough in Pochettino’s eyes he would have got a game or two ahead of Vorm in the domestic cups. And if he had impressed in training Tottenham would surely have bid more to bring him in long term.

Instead they low-balled, saw their bid rejected and walked away anyway.

It was a loan move that made little sense at the time, and even less now Tottenham have opted to stick with what they already had.
