Leeds United forward Pawel Cibicki kick-started his Whites career at the weekend with an impressive substitute performance.

Cibicki has not started a league game since signing in August and has on many occasions not even made the bench.

Against QPR he seized his chance, providing an assist for hat-trick man Kemar Roofe, and making the most of his 63 minutes of game time.

Was it an inspired decision from manager Thomas Christiansen? It may seem that way on first glance, but really it was purely down to luck, and Cibicki deserves the credit.

Cibicki was only called up after a late injury to Jay-Roy Grot, who has been Leeds’ default option off the bench in recent weeks.

When striker Caleb Ekuban got injured, Christiansen had very few attacking options on the bench.

Cibicki was the only forward player available, and he had Grot’s injury to thank.

It was always going to take an unfortunate series of events to his teammates for Cibicki to rise up the pecking order after his slow start, but the important thing is he took his chance.

Now many more chances could come his way, and Grot could be set for a spell in the stands
