Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers were linked with a move for the Scottish midfielder in January.
Kevin McDonald’s links to Rangers this past January came as something of a surprise.
According to the print edition of The Sun (9th January, page 50), Rangers were interested in a £1.5 million deal for the Fulham ace.
The Gers were in the market for a central midfielder at the time, but three months on from the reported interest, did they ever really stand a chance of signing the Scot?
The Cottagers beat Leeds 2-0 at Craven Cottage on Tuesday to move third in the Championship, five points adrift of automatic promotion into the Premier League.
Afterwards, Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic told The Standard: “If you’ve followed Fulham all season you can recognise his value, his work.
“Normally you ask me about players who score the goals, about Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney. Nobody asks about him but he’s an important player for us and did a great job.”
Those comments suggest that McDonald – who has started 36 Championship games this season – is very much appreciated by the Serbian manager and selling him in January was probably never on the cards – and especially not for £1.5 million.
Rangers wound up agreeing a loan deal for QPR midfielder Sean Goss, whereas the return of Graham Dorrans means that the Ibrox side – also linked with McDonald back in 2016, under Mark Warburton – are unlikely to renew an interest in the former Wolves man.
But whatever happens with Fulham’s promotion bid this season, it seems like it’ll take a substantial offer to make Jokanovic agree to sell him.
