Jesus Gamez is set to leave Newcastle United this summer, according to reports.

The Chronicle reported on Friday that Newcastle United would be releasing Jesus Gamez this summer.

The 32-year-old remains sidelined during what has been an injury-hit two seasons at Newcastle and Rafael Benitez is unwilling to offer him an extension for obvious reasons.

Signed by Benitez for £1.5 million in 2016, Gamez, who joined from Atletico Madrid, has only managed to make 10 appearances for the Magpies across all competitions since his move.

He is by no means a bad player, but he must go down as a waste of money based on his lack of impact – and especially given his salary.

By the time he leaves Newcastle, Gamez, who makes £35,000 per week according to The Star, will have ‘earned’ around £3.6 million in wages from the North-East club.

Through no fault of his own really, the left-back, who played 24 times for Atletico over a two-year period, has been a significant waste of money.

Including the transfer fee, he will have cost Newcastle over £5 million when he leaves, which doesn’t sound like a lot in the modern market, but it is for the cash-strapped Magpies who spent that amount on Joselu last summer.

Joselu isn’t a world beater by any means, but at least he is available to repay the money that was spent on him, whereas Gamez, sadly, never will.
