Everton reportedly made an approach to Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner – before turning again to Sam Allardyce.
The fact that Everton have now re-opened talks with Sam Allardyce about taking over at Goodison Park rather sums up how their managerial search has gone so far.
After all, it does not reflect well on the club that they are now returning to a man who turned them down a matter of weeks ago because he did not think they were serious enough about offering him the job, per The Mail.
Following on from their failure to lure the likes of Marco Silva, Sean Dyche or Carlo Ancelotti to Goodison Park, it appears that the 63-year-old, out-of-work Allardyce is little more than a last resort.
But, according to The Mirror, there was another Premier League manager on Everton’s wishlist until recently. The report claims that the Merseysiders made an approach for Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner but, as it stands, there appears to be no chance of the German joining close friend Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside.
But, in stark contrast to the short-term, quick-fix that is Allardyce, it appears that Wagner is exactly the kind of manager who would have been perfect for The Toffees.
The ideal appointment?
Everton is a side in transition and one beginning a new era, spending almost £150 million this summer on a raft of new players. And Wagner is the sort of young, head-strong coach with a clear game plan that could have spearheaded a revolution at Goodison Park.
Since being appointed by Huddersfield in November 2015, the former Dortmund youth coach has guided The Terriers to the Premier League for the first time via his typically high-octane counter attacking approach complemented with real team-spirit and organisation – two attributes a rudderless Everton side have lacked all season long.
Wagner would have been an appointment for the long-term, someone who could put a plan in place and give direction and leadership to this newly assembled side.
Instead, it appears Everton are going to hand the freelance firefighter Allardyce another return to Premier League football.
