Speaking on the Under the Cosh Podcast, Kieran Trippier has been discussing how he almost signed for Liverpool from Burnley.

Once upon a time, the Newcastle star was one of the hottest properties in the Championship and after a promotion season with Burnley, he was being courted by some top clubs.

Everton and Spurs were keen, but according to Trippier he was very close to joining Liverpool before they opted to sign Nathaniel Clyne instead.

Clyne ended up at Anfield and Trippier would eventually head to Spurs the next summer.

Trippier nearly joined Liverpool

The Newcastle star spoke about how he almost joined the Reds.

“I think it was the season after we got promoted there were a few clubs interested. Tottenham obviously, Everton and Liverpool before they got Nathaniel Clyne as well, it was either me or him who was going to go to Liverpool. I only had a year left on my contract and Dyche wanted me to sign a new deal with a release clause and I thought it made sense to play 38 games in the Premier League before getting that move,” Trippier said.

Trippier vs Trent

One of the hottest topics in English football right now is the Kieran Trippier vs Trent Alexander-Arnold debate as Gareth Southgate tries to pick his best team at the World Cup.

Newcastle fans, and seemingly Southgate, believe that Trippier is the better option, while Alexander-Arnold also has his backers across the country.

This rivalry very nearly became a reality at club level too, and we have to imagine that Alexander-Arnold wouldn’t have gotten so many chances as youngster if Trippier was ahead of him in the pecking order rather than an injury-prone Clyne.

Luckily for Alexander-Arnold, this move didn’t come off and he was able to break into the Liverpool team as a teenager and he hasn’t looked back since.

Trippier meanwhile is proving his ability at St James’ Park these days and he looks like he’s going to be starting ahead of Alexander-Arnold in Qatar later this month.
