Manchester United star Wayne Rooney was one who slated the Chelsea strikers theatrics.
Chelsea’s match winner last night was Didier Drogba- a man who many consider will be leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer.
He proved, as the tabloids like to say ‘There is life in the old Drog yet’ by turning in a memorable performance.
It was not all about Drogba, the whole Chelsea team performed magnificently, with Gary Cahill proving the doubters wrong who considered he would struggle with the step up to Champions League football after his debut in Napoli.
The attention though will remain on Drogba who was criticised by fans and fellow professionals alike for his theatrics and time-wasting.
Wayne Rooney was one, who wrote on Twitter: “You’re a good player but please get up Drogba.”
Observers will note however that Rooney is yet to comment on Ashley Young’s triple somersault with pike against Villa last weekend.
Former United defender and Sky pundit Gary Neville also weighed in, debating retrospective bans for playacting, describing Drogba as the worst offender – suggesting he would have earned a treble of three match bans.
As our eyes turn to Barcelona v Real Madrid’s El Clasico clash this weekend at the Nou Camp, there is every chance we will be reminded of the very worst facets of the game as well as the best.
Last year’s semi-finals between the Spanish rivals were almost unwatchable because of the amount of playacting.
Barcelona have several renowned offenders in their line-up, including Sergio Busquets and Dani Alves, who both often go down at the merest of touches as is scythed down by a sniper.
So with that in mind, we are asking whether Drogba’s histrionics were justified?
If you can’t beat them, join them, right?
Here are some fan reactions to Chelsea’s stunning victory, thanks to Winkball.
