Graeme Murty’s honeymoon period as interim Rangers boss is well and truly over, with back-to-back defeats against Hamilton Academical and Dundee seeing the Gers slip further behind reigning champions Celtic. And of all the players he opted to select during his time at the helm, one has been particularly controversial.
Danny Wilson stepped in alongside Ross McCrorie to form a new-look centre-back pairing and it initially looked to be working wonders, but in hindsight was the 25-year-old lucky to get those early outings under his belt without a mistake?
Wilson’s more recent showings have been poor to say the least and Rangers need Bruno Alves or Fabio Cardoso back as soon as possible.
McCrorie is a class act who looks set for a very bright future in the game, but Wilson is not of the sufficient quality for this Rangers side and it would be no surprise if he was shipped out when a new permanent boss is finally appointed.
There was a brief time when it seemed the much-maligned Rangers man was ready to prove his doubters wrong. But that time was brief and perhaps more due to luck than talent.
Alves and McCrorie could be the partnership that finally allows Rangers to kick-start their hit-and-miss campaign, with Wilson slipping back into the periphery with little chance of yet another opportunity to prove his worth.
