Al Horford has hinted there was a deeper reason behind his decision to leave the Boston Celtics, suggesting his move to the Golden State Warriors was not purely about basketball.

The veteran big man spoke candidly about his offseason choice, indicating that personal considerations played a significant role in ending his long association with Boston.

After years as a central figure in the Celtics’ core, Horford’s departure raised eyebrows across the league.

Al Horford hints at a deeper reason behind leaving the Boston Celtics

In comments shared by Jay King, Horford said “Something that’s deeper than just the basketball stuff of it.

“And it’s something that at some point I’ll share with people, but for me it felt like it was the time for me to go elsewhere.”

The wording was deliberate. Horford made clear that his exit was not simply about contracts, minutes or championship odds.

After playing a key role in Boston’s recent success and serving as a respected locker-room presence, the timing of his move carried weight.

His refusal to elaborate suggests there are personal layers to the decision that extend beyond the court, leaving the door open for further explanation in the future.

Al Horford’s performance with the Warriors since joining

Since arriving in Golden State, Horford has operated primarily as a veteran rotational anchor, averaging just under eight points and five rebounds per game while providing spacing and defensive organisation.

His value has not been defined by headline numbers. Instead, the Warriors have relied on his positioning, communication, and ability to stretch the floor, particularly when lineups require balance around their primary scorers.

Golden State’s frontcourt rotation has leaned on his experience during injury disruptions, and his efficiency from the perimeter has helped maintain offensive structure. While he is no longer a focal scorer, Horford’s role has been about stability and decision-making.

Whether his deeper reason for leaving Boston eventually becomes public or not, his impact in San Francisco has already shown that the move was about more than sentiment. It was about fit, timing and a new chapter.
