It might be more on-off than Ross and Rachel in Friends, but Newcastle United appear to be signing Bruno Guimaraes.
Earlier this week it was widely reported that Newcastle had agreed a deal with Lyon to sign the Brazilian midfielder.
However, the Ligue 1 outfit were quick to release a statement to reveal that actually, nothing had been agreed.
This deflated the Magpies’ supporters in quite a major way.
But it does now appear as if Newcastle will be getting their man.
According toSky Sports, Guimaraes will undergo a medical in Brazil today ahead of joining the St James’s Park outfit.
Here’s how former United defender Warren Barton reacted to the development on Twitter:
Hefty
Saudi Public Investment Fund, Newcastle’s majority owners, will pay £33 million to get the deal done.
PIF are already wildly popular on Tyneside, along with Amanda Staveley and the Reuben Brothers.
They brought an end to Mike Ashley’s controversial and lengthy reign in the North East.
But if and when the Guimaraes deal is finalised, well their collective popularity will simply skyrocket.
Third signing
This will be Newcastle’s third signing of what’s proving to be a brilliant transfer window.
Eddie Howe welcomed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood earlier in January and the addition of Guimaraes will further strengthen the belief that they can survive relegation.
They’re still 18th in the Premier League standings, but a victory at Leeds United last weekend, combined with these additions, and the outlook on Tynside is looking infinitely more upbeat than it did at the start of the month.
