Almiron finally joined Newcastle for a club-record fee on deadline day.
Warren Barton has slammed Danny Mills’ comments about Miguel Almiron on Newcastle United’s official website, after Mills stated he had not heard of The Toon’s new club-record signing.
Newcastle finally completed the £21million signing of 24-year-old Almiron from MLS side Atlanta United, after the 13-time Paraguay international guided Atlanta to the MLS Cup last season.
Almiron, who is an attacking midfielder, scored 13 goals and created 13 more last term and has said he has remained fit in order to jump in at the deep end. He will not face Tottenham on Saturday, as he is still waiting for his Visa.
Danny Mills said prior to his signing on BBC Radio 5 Live, as quoted by the Chronicle: “I’ve never really heard of him, in all honesty,” and former Newcastle defender Barton – who is an expert on MLS football – slammed Mills.
“I heard Danny Mills say that he’d never heard of him,” Barton said. “To me, it’s quite strange that you’ve never heard of players in other leagues – does that make him a bad player then?
“Because you don’t know, say, the Argentinian league back to front, does that make it a bad league? It’s very strange and a bit ignorant, really.”
Almiron is one of two signings made by Newcastle on deadline day, with AS Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca joining the club on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal.
Benitez wanted a winger, a no.10 and a left-back before the start of the transfer window and with both Barreca and Almiron – it seems as though he has got both, with Almiron able to play out wide and in the hole.
