Stephen Warnock has claimed that Liverpool fans are ‘desperate’ to sign Thiago from Bayern Munich, but he believes there is ‘reluctance’ from the club itself because of the fee touted, as he told Sky Sports News (27/08/20 at 1:15 pm).

Liverpool have been rumoured to sign Thiago for some while now, with Der Spiegel claiming that the champions of England will land the playmaker who conquered Europe with Bayern.

Thiago has one-year left on his contract, and there seems to be an acceptance from the German giants that they will allow him to look for that fresh challenge he is craving, but it seems it will cost £30 million to secure his services, as reported by the Independent.

Warnock touched upon how influential Thiago was for Bayern during their Champions League run, but understood why the Reds wouldn’t want to put big money on the table for a player they could land for free next summer.

“I think all Liverpool fans are talking about it across Merseyside and across the world is that they watched his performances for Bayern Munich in the Champions League,” Warnock told Sky Sports. “He dictates the game. In the Champions League final, he was instrumental in everything good that Bayern Munich did and the way they played.

“I think that Liverpool fans are desperate to see him at Anfield, to improve Liverpool’s squad. They know it’s going to be a big ask next year against a Manchester City team that’s going to improve, with the likes of Nathan Ake coming to the club and whether they get Messi across the line as well. There’s definitely going to be competition from Chelsea as well.

“They understand that they need to improve the squad. They need to add numbers to it. But there seems to be a reluctance, with a year to go on his contract, to play that 30 million euro buy-out. Will Liverpool have to sell players to make that deal happen? The likes of Harry Wilson and Marko Grujic? Will them two players have to move on in order to bring Thiago into the club?”

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

Straight off the bat, Thiago would add a more swashbuckling drive, flair and attacking-threat to Jurgen Klopp’s industrious midfield.

Thiago is used to playing the high-press and with high intensity at the Allianz Arena, so doing that job for a German lighting up Merseyside will be no problem at all for the technically gifted Spaniard.

The awareness Thiago has in his game, the ability to move the ball whichever way he and at whatever speed he wants, and then cause panic to opposition defenders by threading the most precise of balls, is something that would elevate a Liverpool midfield that is workman-like and in need of spice.
