Mark Warburton thinks Graeme Murty deserves more time as Rangers manager.
Former Rangers manager Mark Warburton thinks the club need to show patience with Graeme Murty rather than axing him this summer.
Murty is only on a deal with the Glasgow club until the end of the season and the Daily Record reports that the hierarchy at Ibrox could seek a change in the dugout, with Kilmarnock’s Steve Clarke heavily linked.
Warburton spent a little over 18 months as Gers boss, leaving in February 2017 shortly before taking charge at Nottingham Forest, and believes the current chief deserves more time to prove himself.
“Graeme has earned the respect of the squad and he has the fans on side,” the 55-year-old was quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“He has done a very good job, but if Rangers are going to give him the chance to manage, then be patient with him.
“Expectations is the key. Fans will think he will challenge Celtic next year and if he isn’t then they will want him sacked by Christmas.
“If they do that then it will be the same old cycle.
“Give the man a chance, give him the time and backing, verbally and financially, that he needs to manage a club of that stature.”
Murty still has the chance to win the Scottish Cup, facing fierce rivals Celtic in the semi-finals on April 15, and victory in that competition could save the 43-year-old’s position.
Pressure has mounted on the Rangers manager after successive defeats in the Old Firm derby and then at home to Killie left them ten points behind the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership table.
