The Gers were beaten by Brendan Rodgers side 5-1 in the Old Firm derby last weekend.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton has told the club’s official website he is not understanding the importance of the defeat to Celtic.

The Gers travelled to Celtic Park last Saturday for their Old Firm derby in the league in four years.

There was intense build-up to the game, with many keen to see how Mark Warburton’s side would match up to their rivals and whether they could be serious contenders to their title dominance.

It proved to be a disastrous afternoon for them though, as Celtic ran out comfortable 5-1 winners.

The result saw Rangers come in for stern criticism from fans and pundits alike afterwards but their manager says he cannot understand the reaction.

“I’m not understating the importance of the result – don’t get me wrong for one second, but nobody has died and we need to get on with it,” he told the club’s official website.

“Absolutely, the result was one that hurt so many people, none more so than us, but we have to just get on with it. Judge us in May. Right now some of the comments have been inappropriate.”

Celtic's Moussa Dembele celebrates

Rangers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership with eight points from their first five games.

The defeat to Celtic leaves them four points behind their rivals, who could increase that to seven should they win their game in hand.

That kind of gap would be a tough one to overcome and Warburton’s side will need to go on a winning run to try to catch Brendan Rodgers’ side, starting with Ross County this weekend.
