Victor Wanyama is holding talks with Club Brugges over a transfer away from Tottenham Hotspur, report BBC Sport.

A move is expected to go through, with Wanyama playing no role in Tottenham’s opening two games.

For Spurs, Wanyama’s impending departure is simply the latest part of the evolution of a team which aspire to be one of Europe’s elite.

Some would say Spurs are already part of that group, having made the Champions League final last season.

Wanyama played in the semi-finals against Ajax, but these were games which exposed him as not being as good enough.

When Wanyama signed for Spurs in 2016 he made an immediate impact, with his tenacity in midfield forcing Eric Dier out of the team.

Wanyama was a very good Premier League midfielder, but he is a long way from his peak, with injuries taking their toll.

He is a big downgrade from new signing Tanguy Ndombele, while Spurs are blessed with options in midfield thanks to Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Giovani Lo Celso.

Tottenham’s moves for Ndombele and Lo Celso demonstrated that Mauricio Pochettino is focused on building a new team, and Wanyama is part of his old one.

He accomplished his goal of helping Pochettino transition Tottenham into Champions League regulars and one of England’s best clubs.

But in terms of actually getting them to he next level, Tottenham simply needed better, and the decisions this summer reflect that.
