Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama may be leaving this month.
According to the London Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama is willing to hold off on a move to Club Brugge.
Wanyama, 28, has fallen out of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans over the last couple of seasons, despite being so important in his first campaign and at Southampton together.
The Kenyan star now looks set to leave this month, and Club Brugge are working hard to snap him as a replacement for Aston Villa new boy Marvelous Nakamba.
However, it’s now thought that Wanyama wants to hold off on agreeing a deal until Club Brugge’s Champions League fate is known, as they play the second leg of their qualifying clash with LASK Linz on Wednesday.
Club Brugge lead 1-0 from the first leg and will be favourites to go through with the second leg at home, but Wanyama seemingly wouldn’t want to commit before knowing they’ll be in the group stage.
That may be interesting news to Celtic. New Bhoys signing Fraser Forster has told the Daily Record that Wanyama has told him to keep the number 67 shirt at Celtic warm ‘for now’, hinting that he has some interest in returning to the Bhoys.
His stance on a move to Club Brugge could go either way with Celtic. On the one hand, it would suggest that Wanyama isn’t keen on joining a side that either can’t offer football in a top five league, or can’t offer Champions League football, which would rule out Celtic for now.
However, if Club Brugge miss out, it would leave them on a level pegging with Celtic, offering similar things; Europa League football, a title race but maybe a big step down from Tottenham in terms of quality.
Celtic fans may still hope for a deal for Wanyama before the transfer deadline, but with a club-record fee needed, it may be a difficult move to pull off.
