Tottenham Hotspur are being linked with a move for Boca Juniors ace Wilmar Barrios.

Victor Wanyama may have been a favourite for Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton and in their first season together at Tottenham Hotspur, but that doesn’t seem to be the case right now.

The Kenyan midfielder, 27, was a star in his first season with Spurs, but suffered with injury and fitness problems last term, and hasn’t started a single Premier League game this season.

With The Sun claiming that Wanyama and Mousa Dembele will be made available in January, it seems that Wanyama’s days are numbered, and his days as a Pochettino favourite appear to be over too.

Wanyama’s case isn’t helped by ongoing rumours about Boca Juniors midfielder Wilmar Barrios, given that the combative Colombian is in many ways similar to Wanyama.

Strong, relentless and superb in the tackle, many believe that Barrios could be lined up to be Wanyama’s heir in the Spurs midfield, especially if Spurs do cash in on Wanyama in January.

Argentinian radio station Crack Deportivo reported on Friday that Tottenham have already agreed terms with the agent of Barrios, and a deal worth €23million (£20million) was in the pipeline for January.

However, ESPN today claim that there is no deal in the offing for Barrios, and he won’t be heading to Spurs in January, with conflicting reports emerging about a potential move.

Barrios is far from the only midfielder to have been linked with Spurs of late; Lewis Cook, Tanguy Ndombele, Frenkie De Jong and Youri Tielemans are just some of the names touted for a move to Spurs, and even if Barrios doesn’t end up signing, the swirling rumours about incoming midfielders and a potential exit for Wanyama all seem to point to a January exit, leaving him to worry about his future in North London.
