Spurs have an edge, and it’s thanks to manager Mauricio Pochettino’s long-term admiration of the defender.

The Mirror reported in 2014 that Pochettino wanted to make Bertrand one of his first signings for Tottenham.

Bertrand was looking to leave Chelsea at the time, but dealings between Spurs and the Blues have never been easy, and they were impossible while Jose Mourinho was Blues manager.

This saw Bertrand move to Pochettino’s former club Southampton instead, who were looking for a replacement for Luke Shaw.

Pochettino ended up sticking with Danny Rose, who became England’s top choice before injury curtailed his progress.

Both Shaw and Bertrand have now been mentioned as potential replacements for Rose, with Pochettino fans of both.
