French midfielder Paul Pogba is a man who Manchester United have high hopes for.
When he came on for Paul Scholes in the veteran’s testimonial last summer it was even described as a passing of the torch.
Fast forward seven months and Pogba is yet to start a match for United, while Scholes is back playing first team football.
The 18-year-old Frenchman has featured in the Carling Cup as a substitute three times, and against Stoke in the Premier League earlier this month.
The Daily Mail report today that Juventus are stepping up their bid to tempt Pogba to Italy.
Considering the controversial circumstances in which United signed him from French side Le Havre, loyalty is not perhaps his strong point.
United have already seen one talented youngster leave this year, Ravel Morrison, and they would not want to lose another.
Morrison, despite his off-field dramas, left principally because he was too impatient to wait to play first team football and West Ham were willing to offer it to him.
That is why the report in the Manchester Evening News that Pogba could be handed his first start in the first team against Ajax seems like it could be likely to be accurate.
United have a 2-0 lead going into the home leg of the Europa League tie and are strong favourites.
There may be few better occasions this season, with the title race hotting up, to hand the youngster a debut.
If it helps convince him to stay, then United will have had a very successful evening.
