Should Celtic take a punt on the veteran hitman this summer?

Cardiff City have terminated Rickie Lambert’s contract and Celtic should take a punt on him.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers obviously rates the English striker after signing him for Liverpool in 2014.

And although Lambert is now 35, four goals in 13 Championship starts might suggest that he still has something to offer a forward line.

Of course, the Hoops clearly have two of the best hitmen in Scotland in the form of Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele, but Griffiths has suggested that he will not spend another season playing second fiddle to the talented Frenchman.

Regardless, Lambert, who was wanted by then-Bhoys boss Neil Lennon in 2010 according to The Mail, brings qualities which Dembele and Griffiths do not.

The former Southampton marksman, who netted 117 times in 235 games for the South Coast outfit, offers plenty of power and height from a number nine role and Celtic will, like it or not, come up against opposition which negate Griffiths and Dembele.

They need a target man, someone who brings midfielders into play, and Lambert could be that man. Considering he’s free, Celtic have little to lose.
