Ryan Bennett could become one of the summer window’s most coveted signings after his release by Norwich City.
Newly promoted Brighton were linked with a move for the 27-year-old on Monday, and it would be no surprise if the Seagulls aren’t the only interested party.
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce was said to be tracking Bennett at Hull City a year ago [HITC sources], while Villans assistant Colin Calderwood worked with him for two years at Norwich.
So could a move to Villa Park be on this summer?
Do Aston Villa need him?
Bruce is clearly open to the idea of signing a new central defender, having taken Christopher Samba on what everyone bar himself would usually call ‘a trial spell’ earlier this year, with a view to signing the Congolese in the summer. With Samba now linked with a reunion with Harry Redknapp across the Second City, however, Bennett may come into his thinking.

What would they be getting?
A solid top-end Championship (at the very least) centre-back with more than 150 appearances in English football’s highest two divisions, who is perhaps in need of a fresh start after losing his way a bit this season. He’s a good age (27), height (6’2″) and can play in more than one position (right-back too, if required). At his best, he’s as good if not better than any of Villa’s current options in his primary position.
How likely is a deal?
Recent reports have claimed Villa must sell to buy this summer, which should only increase the likelihood of Villans interest in Bennett. Having said that, Bruce isn’t short of options at the back, and one suspects his pursuit will depend on the sale of one of Micah Richards or Tommy Elphick. The Brighton link could also prove problematic for Villa.
