Gerson missed training on Wednesday as the Marseille ace aims for a January departure amid interest from Premier League outfit West Ham United, according to La Provence.
As the midfielder’s father tells L’Equipe, he’s not exactly happy about his backseat role under Marseille coach Igor Tudor; a lack of game-time for the Ligue 1 clients eventually costing him a seat on Tite’s plane to Qatar.

“We’re going to look elsewhere. (An exit is) inevitable,” Gerson’s father and agent explains. “If Gerson is no longer important for OM, then we’ll find a club who values him.
“I can’t hide that we’re angry. This is a very problematic situation. How can a player who is in full possession of his skills be left out overnight? With no chance to show his talent? It’s incomprehensible.
“We are really sad. This coach (Tudor) prevents us from dreaming of a place in the squad for the World Cup with Brazil.”
West Ham in talks to sign Brazil international Gerson from Marseille
Gerson, capped four times by his country, recently travelled back to South America in an attempt to seal a return to former employers Flamengo. But with president Rodolfo Landim indicating that Marseille’s £13 million asking price is a little rich for Flamengo’s blood, Gerson may have to look closer to home for a fresh start.
Per Goal, West Ham are in talks with the 25-year-old’s representatives. A commanding yet cultured presence in the centre of the park; Gerson is footballer brimming with potential. An expert ball-carrier, and a goalscorer too. He scored 11 times for Marseille from central midfield in 2021/22. At his best, he could upseat Tomas Soucek while forming a terrific partnership alongside Declan Rice.
L’Equipe say that he has already said farewell to his L’OM team-mates. So it’s maybe no surprise to see that the one-time Roma youngster was missing from training this week (La Provence).
‘Authorised to return to Brazil pending the finalisation of his transfer to Flamengo, which did not succeed, Gerson was expected this morning for the resumption of training (at Marseille),’ they write.
‘He didn’t show up.’
This unhappy story looks destined for an appropriately unhappy ending.
