St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson isn’t surprised to see Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers taking an interest in goalkeeper Zander Clark, speaking to The Courier.

Don’t bite my head off, but did Steven Gerrard jump ship at the right time? A cycle certainly appears to be coming to an end at Rangers.

Between now and summer 2023, Scott Arfield, Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun, Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo, Ryan Jack and Filip Helander will all become free agents.

And with the Scottish Premiership champions posting substantial losses recently, Gerrard could be forgiven for wondering whether a substantial rebuilding project would have been possible (Football Scotland).

That’s without mentioning two of the club’s most influential players – Steven Davis and Allan McGregor – are 36 and 39 respectively.

And reports suggesting Rangers have identified Zander Clark as a potential replacement for the soon-to-be-40-year-old McGregor have only raised concerns about the club’s dwindling financial resources after years of heavy spending.

Clark, after all, will be a free agent himself in the summer.

And, despite playing a key role as St Johnstone won not one but two domestic cups in 2020/21, he hardly feels like the most ambitious signing.

Rangers eye Zander Clark as possible McGregor replacement

“Given the way Zander has played, it’s no surprise he’s being linked with other clubs,” says Saints coach Davidson, determined to keep the Glasgow-born keeper at McDiarmid Park.

“He’s produced big performances in big games for us. So it’s a testament to how well he’s been doing if other clubs are interested.

“But we have offered him a very good contract and want him to stay here. Hopefully he will make his mind up where he wants to be and that will be with St Johnstone.”

Davidson has recently been linked with a move to Rangers too as the club looks to replace Gerrard following the manager’s sudden switch to Aston Villa.

Former Ibrox ace Giovanni van Bronckhorst, however, appears to have emerged as the club’s top target.
