Wolves conceded four goals in the final 20 minutes at Molineux on Tuesday night.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Walter Zenga has labelled his players’ collapse against Barnsley on Tuesday night as “unacceptable” and “shameful”, speaking to the club’s website.

Wolves did not look too bad and had seen an early shot cleared off the line at Molineux, but completely crumbled in the final 20 minutes, conceding four times without reply to fold to a heavy defeat in front of their own dissenting fans.

That defeat now leaves the Midlands club winless in three matches, but it is the nature of the loss rather than simply the result itself which has incensed both supporters and Zenga.

Unsurprisingly, Wolves were booed off the pitch at the end of the match, and Zenga has insisted that supporters were right to show their anger and unhappiness at such a display.

The Italian himself was clearly furious after the final whistle, and had some choice words for his own players.

Zenga said, via the Wolves website: “The second half was better and then after the moment we made the changes to be more offensive and we started to create something we conceded a goal. And it is what happened then that we need to talk about.

“To lose a goal after 73 minutes is not the end of the game and not the end of the world. I never want to see my players again give up like they did in this moment. It brings us shame to lose four goals at home, for all of us and for the club.

“I am so sorry for everyone because this is not my style and not the style of my team. And I will not accept any more this kind of situation. It is shame for me, for the fans, for the club and for everybody. The fans are right to be unhappy. Like they celebrate when we play well and win they must be critical as well.”

In a world where managers often look to explain away bad results or incessantly take the positives from defeat, Wolves fans will likely be pleased to see Zenga so incensed by Tuesday’s horror show.

They have little time to dwell on the defeat, with a trip to scintillating Newcastle in store on Saturday.
