The Rangers legend feels that if Gerrard’s side can stop the late collapses they have a chance of winning trophies.

Rangers Manager Steven Gerrard looks on during the Ladbrokes Premier League match between Kilmarnock and Rangers at Rugby Park on August 04, 2019 in Kilmarnock, Scotland.

Rangers legend Walter Smith believes Steven Gerrard must get to the root of their tendency to throw away matches before they can challenge for silverware, The Scottish Sun report.

The Gers boss himself noted prior to his side’s visit to Kilmarnock that if they’d done more late in games last season they’d be celebrating success.

Late drama almost cost them again at Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon when they conceded an 83rd minute equaliser in their Scottish Premiership opener.

Thankfully for Rangers they dug themselves out of a hole and netted in stoppage time through Connor Goldson for a 2-1 win.

Smith, who knows a thing or two about bringing titles to Ibrox, believes that it’s the main barrier between them and closing the gap on Celtic.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “If Gerrard makes the changes he wants to, Rangers can do it.

“Rangers’ problem last year was the inconsistency in performances.

“In quite a few games they were winning until the last ten or 15 minutes and they would fail to hold out and it cost them. Those are the things that Steven needs to eradicate.”

The managerial legend’s words, made prior to Rangers’ Ayrshire visit, are almost prophetic considering how the match against Killie played out.

Can the Ibrox side find a ruthless, cutting edge that starts to have everyone seriously thinking they are genuine trophy contenders?

It’s a trait that Gerrard has been calling on for a while now but it’s rarely been seen.

Although the Gers managed to persevere this time, they’ll need to start finding a way to kill off these matches if they have hopes of not dropping silly points over the coming season home and away.
