Glasgow Rangers fans’ support for the team away from Ibrox is praised by Gers legend Walter Smith.
The 70-year-old former Dundee United defender was the manager of Rangers from 1991 until 1998 and then again from 2007 until 2011.
During his two spells as the manager of the Gers, Smith guided the Ibrox club to the league title in Scotland 10 times, the Scottish Cup on five occasions and the Scottish League Cup six times.
Smith has praised the Rangers fans for their unwavering support for the team, even when the club were in the lower divisions in the Scottish football league.
The Rangers legend has also favourably compared the Gers’ away support to those at Arsenal and Manchester United, which will make the fans proud.
Smith wrote The Glasgow Evening Times: “There are very few clubs who have retained the level of support through the circumstances that Rangers have.
“They’ve given the club tremendous backing, all of the supporters over the last five years have been incredible. You can’t speak highly enough about them.”
“It’s quite amazing when you retire and you’re watching Sky Sports on a Saturday afternoon and if Arsenal and Manchester United are away from home then Rangers have the biggest support against Elgin,” added Smith.
Sign of progress
Rangers fans must be bitterly disappointed that the team are not in the running for the Scottish Premiership title this season.
The Gers, though, can still finish second in the league, and Graeme Murty’s side are also in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.
Rangers have certainly progressed from last season, and perhaps they could challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title this season.
