Rangers currently sit in third position in the Scottish Premiership table.
Walter Smith
Former Gers boss Walter Smith has warned current boss Mark Warburton that the Ibrox faithful will allow him one season to show that he is capable of managing a club the size of Rangers before they begin to pile on the pressure, as quoted by the Daily Record.
Warburton’s men have recovered well from an extremely poor start to their 2016/17 campaign, and now sit third in the Scottish Premiership table, after going six games unbeaten in the league.
The worrying thing for Rangers fans though is the fact that they are 11 points behind bitter rivals Celtic, having played a game more than Brendan Rodgers’ men.
And Walter Smith, who won 10 league titles during his time as Rangers boss, told reporters how next season will be vitally important to the club, and how they must close the gap on the Hoops to appease the fans, as quoted by the Daily Record:
“Even the most fervent Rangers supporter would realistically admit that if Rangers finish second in the league – and towards the end of the season look as if they’re getting closer to Celtic – it would be acceptable. But next season, whatever happens, there will need to be a bigger challenge to Celtic. They’ll need a bigger push, which means trying to find investment.”
Rangers manager Mark Warburton
That is the problem that Warburton faces at Rangers – how will he manage to attract the kind of player needed to help close the gap on Celtic?
At this moment in time, they cannot compete with the Hoops financially, so their recruitment needs to be smarter. Warburton needs a plan and a vision of how he wants to take Rangers forward as a club, because second or third place will just not be deemed as acceptable by the fans beyond this season.
