Walter Mazzarri was keen on becoming Celtic manager last summer – and he is already out of work again after being sacked by Cagliari.

Cast your mind back to February 2021. Celtic have just parted ways with Neil Lennon and they are searching for a new manager.

In a rather intriguing link, The Sunday Post reported that Italian boss Mazzarri was keen on taking the Celtic job.

This would have been quite the turn for Mazzarri, who was the manager of Celtic cult hero Shunsuke Nakamura at Reggina.

Celtic seemingly never felt the same way about Mazzarri and instead went for Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou has worked wonders at Celtic in his first season in charge and appears to have a brilliant connection with Bhoys fans.

So what about Mazzarri?

The Italian took charge of Cagliari instead, taking over in September – some seven months after registering his interest in Celtic.

Mazzarri previously excelled with Regina, Sampdoria and Napoli, eventually taking over at Inter Milan.

Mixed spells at Watford and Torino followed and it hasn’t exactly gone much better with Cagliari.

The 60-year-old has won just seven times in 35 games at Cagliari, losing 19 times.

Mazzarri’s side lost 2-1 to Verona on Saturday, an eighth defeat in the last nine Series A games – and Mazzarri has paid the price.

Cagliari have now confirmed that Mazzarri has indeed been sacked. Sky Italia claim that Alessandro Agostini – Cagliari’s youth coach – will take over.

There has been a bizarre situation though as Sport Italia’s Alfredo Pedulla reports that Mazzarri had a strange clause.

It’s stated that is Cagliari sacked Mazzarri without them being in the relegation zone, his contract would be extended until 2024.

We can only assume that means being paid more compensation for being sacked rather than him actually keeping the job against Cagliari’s will.

Mazzarri’s exit has been confirmed and he now finds himself out of work again. Oh how Celtic will be delighted they went with Postecoglou.
