Swansea have been reportedly interested in Tottenham defender Walker-Peters this season.
Tottenham Hotspur face Swansea City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon and Mauricio Pochettino may look to give a few fringe players a chance to shine – so Kyle Walker-Peters should be banging his manager’s door down for a start.
The 20-year-old has impressed when given the opportunity to play for Spurs’ senior side, but has had to tend with vigorous competition on either side of the defence in Kieran Trippier, Serge Aurier, Ben Davies and Danny Rose.
With a fight to finish in the top four of the Premier League and a chance to finally earn a trophy under Mauricio Pochettino in the form of the FA Cup, tactical consistency is key and chances for fringe players will remain small until the end.
Saturday’s game could be the last opportunity Pochettino has to give his fringe players a chance, and that is why England youth international Walker-Peters must be begging his manager to start.
But it is two-fold for Walker-Peters. When looking at his long-term future, Walker-Peters has little chance of breaking the door down for a position on either side of the defence.
Being afforded a place in the starting eleven on Saturday is just as key to show interested parties what he is capable, then, ahead of the summer transfer window. Spurs’ opponents, Swansea, are likely to be one of those.
The Sun reported back in November that Walker-Peters was a loan target for Swansea and they could reignite that interest in the summer.
Walker-Peters will know that first-team football on a regular basis is unlikely at Spurs, and he needs to consider his long-term future. By starting against Swansea, he can show them what he is capable of ahead of the summer window.
