England defeated Australia 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.
Former player Chris Waddle says he prefers Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyle Walker over Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne for the England right-back slot this summer, he told BBC Radio Five Live.
The two players have been among the best right-backs in the Premier League this past season and both have deservedly made Roy Hodgson’s preliminary squad for this summer’s European Championships.
Both Walker and Clyne are capable of defending solidly, pushing up to join the attack and providing both key passes and accurate crosses for England’s forwards to get on the score-sheet.
But which player deserves to start at Euro 2016? Former England international Waddle has his say after witnessing the duo in action against both Turkey and Australia these past few days.
“You look at England over the two games and they just don’t seem to be a balanced side. It was all kick it long, no risk and they were too far apart in midfield,” Waddle told the BBC.
“I don’t know what team Roy’s going to go with. There’s a lot of questions to be asked in a lot of positions. from what I’ve seen I’d go with Kyle Walker ahead of Clyne.”
Walker, 25, played 33 games for Spurs this past season and was among their most consistent performers, averaging an impressive 2.6 tackles, 2.8 interceptions and 3.2 clearances per league encounter.
Clyne also 25, made 33 Premier League starts in his debut campaign at Liverpool and averaged 2.5 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.7 effective clearances per league match.
The two players both offer similar qualities, though on his Spurs performances over the past ten months, Walker should get the nod to start England’s first game in France.
