Group D is shaping up to be one of the tightest in the European section of qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Four teams – Wales, Republic of Ireland, Austria and Serbia – will realistically fancy their chances of making it, and two of them face each other in Cardiff on Saturday.

The hosts dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Georgia during the last international break, while Serbia – inspired by Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic – defeated Moldova and Austria to climb to the top of the group.

The Key Battle – Gareth Bale v Branislav Ivanovic

If Wales are to get back to winning ways, Bale will be key. Having recently signed a new contract at Real Madrid, the 27-year-old has been among the goals of late.

Ivanovic has seen his star fall somewhat of late thanks to some indifferent displays for Chelsea, but he remains Serbia’s most experienced defender and will be charged with stopping the Welsh star.

Last Meeting:

Since Serbia became an independent nation, they have played Wales twice – and both were heavily one-sided encounters.

Having won 6-1 in September 2012, Serbia then triumped 3-0 in the reverse fixture. Welsh supporters will be expecting their side to put in a much more competitive display this time around.
