Putting together a projected team for five years time is a haphazard exercise which could look silly by 2022, but here is a look at an exciting team the Welsh could field.
There are some familiar faces, a few wonderkids, and some big names left on the bench…
GK: Danny Ward (Liverpool)
Danny Ward’s career is still in the early stages for a goalkeeper and by 2022 he will have hoped to finally cracked the Liverpool first team.
Consistency is important in goal and Ward can be Wales’ main man for years to come, building on the four international caps he has already.
RB: Chris Gunter (Reading)
In 2022 Gunter will be 32 but there is a need for this squad to have a balance of youth and experience.
The Reading right-back already has been capped 85 times and he could still play a vital role if Wales reach Qatar.
CB: Ben Davies (Tottenham)
The former Swansea ace is in the form of his career at Tottenham and showing no sign of slowing down just yet.
He has starred at centre-back for Wales in the past and as he gets older this is a longer term position for him rather than bombing up and down the flank.
CB: Regan Poole (Manchester United)
Now it gets interesting, the first uncapped Wales player in this 2022 side.
Poole is just 19 and is part of Manchester United’s academy, currently playing out on loan at League One’s Northampton Town where he has made 10 appearances this season.
He is a Wales under-21 international and has the potential to go on and star at senior level.
LB: Cole Da Silva (Chelsea)
Chelsea talent Cole Da Silva has a brother Jay who is part of England’s set up, but he has committed his own future to Wales.
The marauding left-back has played for Wales up to under-20 level and is a regular for Chelsea’s under-23 side.
CM: Ethan Ampadu (Chelsea)
The second Chelsea talent in this side, Wales fans have already got a glimpse of what Ampadu can do.
He was outstanding in the friendly against Panama in midweek and while he can play at centre-back, defensive midfield is at this stage thought to be his long term best position.
CM: George Thomas (Leicester City)
Leicester City beat competition from several Premier League sides to clinch George Thomas’ signature from Coventry in the summer.
He has starred for their under-23 team, netting four goals and providing two assists in nine games and in five years time he should be an established force at Premier League level, perhaps even keeping Aaron Ramsey out of this Wales side.
AM: David Brooks (Sheffield United)
Sheffield United sensation David Brooks is currently wanted by the top Premier League clubs after a superb start to the season.
He was capped by Wales this week and looks like he will be a key part of the team’s future success.
LW: Ben Woodburn (Liverpool)
Ben Woodburn has set records for Wales and Liverpool early in his career, scoring an outstanding goal in World Cup qualifying earlier this year.
Capable of playing up front or in a number 10 role, Wales could look to use him interchangeably with a very famous face who should lead the line in 2022.
RW: Harry Wilson (Liverpool)
Another Liverpool talent, Wilson made his debut for Wales at just 16.
His form for the under-23 side has been impressive this season, he has netted 7 goals in 6 games. He is a key part of Wales’ future and his link up with his Liverpool teammate could become a feature of the team’s play.
CF: Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)
Don’t write Gareth Bale off just yet. Injuries may have blighted his recent campaign, but a move to a central striker role could help his game.
Similarly to Cristiano Ronaldo’s evolution, Bale is Wales talisman and in 2022 he may be the best man to lead the line.
