There’s long been question marks over the defensive ability of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold – and Anthony Elanga of Manchester United has tormented him in this 45 minutes.
Jurgen Klopp’s outfit visited the Red Devils this evening in search of a first Premier League victory of the campaign.
However, it was a rotten start for Liverpool who fell behind to a goal from Jadon Sancho on 16 minutes.
Sancho goal v Liverpool
The 20-year-old Manchester United prodigy ran off the back of Alexander-Arnold following a quick one-two, before squaring to the unmarked Sancho to fire the hosts ahead.
At 23, the Liverpool right-back is undeniably among football’s very best in an attacking context, but there’s undeniably doubts over his capacity to defend properly.
And Jamie Carragher has certainly allocated him some blame for the Sancho goal, claiming that the England international must ‘wake up’.
He said live on Sky: “Liverpool are all over the place defensively. Trent Alexander-Arnold needs to wake up.”

Klopp’s side slowly but surely began to develop a foothold and Luis Diaz could – and maybe should – have equalised, dragging one effort wide of David De Gea’s post afterwards.
However, Erik ten Hag’s players have bossed the opening 45 minutes for the most part and Klopp will be demanding a massive response from his troops ahead of what promises to be a fascinating second half at Old Trafford.
Should Liverpool lose, they would be five points behind Manchester City already and even at this early stage, it isn’t an advantage you want someone like the Sky Blues to have over you.
