Sunderland winger Wahbi Khazri has told the Sunderland Echo he is willing to fight for his place in the first-team.

The winger was one of the key men for the Black Cats in the second half of last season after joining in the January transfer window.

He played a key role in helping the side to avoid relegation under Sam Allardyce but has so far found himself out of the team under new boss David Moyes.

A change in formation saw him return for the weekend draw with West Bromwich Albion and he put in a solid performance in the process.

Khazri insists he never doubted himself in his spell out of the team and is willing to fight to keep hold of his place moving forward.

“I am happy because this is my first start this season in the league,” he told the Sunderland Echo.

“Last season was totally different because I played every game. This season I haven’t – I need to work. I didn’t doubt myself. I am aggressive, I like the fight! Every day I work and want to help the team.”

The winger has also urged manager Moyes to continue using him in the number ten role in future.

The Sunderland boss elected to use Khazri in that key position in the game as he looked to give more ammunition to striker Jermain Defoe.

It was arguably a change that worked as the winger made two key passes during his time on the pitch, the joint most of any Sunderland player along with Duncan Watmore.

And Khazri has urged his manager to stick with that choice as it is better for Defoe in the long run.

“I think the change in tactics was good for the team,” he added. “I played number 10 and I am happy because I like this position. When I have the ball. I can play right or left of him and. for Jermain. I think it is better because he needs one or two players to play with him.”
