The 35-year-old Crystal Palace defender is out of contract in the summer and would be an excellent addition to the QPR squad.

He may be closer to 40 than 30 but if Crystal Palace let Damien Delaney walk away for free this summer there will surely be no shortage of suitors.

The long-serving centre-back, now in his fifth season at Selhurst Park, has been a regular in each of Palace’s recent Premier League campaigns.

In fact, only the inspired January arrival of Mamadou Sakho managed to break up the Delaney/Scott Dann partnership that has remained in place across four years and under four managers.

However, even Allardyce’s admission that Palace have a mountain to climb if they are to convince Liverpool loanee Sakho to remain in the capital beyond this season, as reported by Goal, does not appear to have convinced the club to hand Delaney a new contract with his current deal expiring in the summer.

Though this could be music to the ears of one of the Irishman’s former clubs. Queens Park Rangers have conceded 51 goals in the Championship this season and, while the lack of a regular goalscorer is arguably a more pressing issue, the club would surely welcome Delaney’s return eight years after he left for Ipswich Town.

After all, manager Ian Holloway did insist recently that he wanted more Championship experience and pedigree in his squad, as reported by the Kilburn Times.

And Delaney, who has played 309 times in the second tier for the likes of Hull City and Ipswich Town, has that in abundance. Not to mention a promotion on his CV from his debut season with Palace.

Age is just a number in football and, even at 35, Delaney has plenty more to give. Though he may be forced to drop down a division to prove that.
